South Africa's seasons flip everything. This is your quick reference for the best months of the year for every outdoor pursuit — fishing to hunting to camping to off-road adventures.
Peak from late spring through summer when water warms and fish are active. Winter can be slow on highveld dams.
Sardine Run peaks Jun-Jul off KZN — one of the world's greatest fishing spectacles. Yellowfin & Marlin peak Nov-Apr.
Pre-spawn Aug-Sep and post-spawn Nov are gold. Summer topwater action Dec-Feb, but heat can slow midday.
Rainbow & Brown trout season officially opens Sept - May in most provinces. Winter closed season for spawning.
Dry winter months (May-Aug) are peak — animals concentrate around water, thin bush = better visibility. Plains game year-round.
Summer for Highveld & Cape. Winter perfect for Bushveld & Kruger (no rain, less bugs, cooler days). Avoid Cape rain Jun-Aug.
Dry winter (Apr-Sep) = passable trails, easier river crossings, no thunderstorms. Summer rain closes many 4x4 tracks.
